Will Kurtz – Newspaper Sculptures

Will Kurtz was born in Flint, Michigan and received his Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from Michigan State University in 1981. He practiced as a landscape architect for 25 years, throughout the United States and Canada. It wasn’t until he was in his mid thirties that he began creating art as a self-taught artist. Eventually his passion for art superseded landscape architecture and he moved to New York at the age of 50 to attend graduate school at the New York Academy of Art. After graduation with an MFA he was selected to remain and do a one-year fellowship. He has since had several solo and group shows and has  been reptresented by several galleries including Mike Weiss Gallery, New York, Queene Anne Galerie, Leipzig, Germany, Converge Gallery, PN and Stricoff Gallery, NY. His work is in many prominent collections around the world. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Aakash Nihalani – Projections

Aakash Nihalani is a multidisciplinary artist probably best known for his playful masking tape illusions and has just completed a new body of work called Projections. In this new endeavour, Nihalani’s cubic designs are projected onto a white wall, becoming an interactive canvas for the viewer. Using new technologies such as coding and motion software, a sensor picks up the viewer’s hand movement and allows the viewer to manipulate the overall look of the piece.

Nasa Funahara – Masking Tape Paintings

Japanese oil painting major Nasa Funahara from the Musashino Art University used layers of colorful masking tapes to create wonderfully detailed versions of famous paintings for a recent series of work. The series includes recreations of iconic paintings such as Van Gogh’s Sunflowers and Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, among many others.

Kristiina Lahde – Measuring Tape Illusions

Kristiina Lahde creates fantastic optical illusion artwork out of coloured measuring tape. The numbers and dashes add another element to the already distracting coloured shapes.

Erika Iris Simmons – Ghost in the Machine

Erika Iris Simmons‘ “Ghost in the Machine” is neat little series of appropriating the tape of a cassette or video to create a portrait of an iconic figure.
