Next up on the Athen B. Gallery series of walls with San Leandro is Francisco Diaz aka Pastel from Buenos Aires, Argentina. The mural entitled “Costanoans” is over three hundred feet long and around 30 ft tall it is located off the side of Highway 880 at Marina West Exit. Photographs by Brock Brake. Here’s what the artist had to say about the piece:
“Costanoan by early Spanish colonists, are a Native American people of the Northern California coast. When Spanish explorers and missionaries arrived in the late 18th century, the Ohlone (named costanoans by the spanish colony), inhabited the area along the coast from San Francisco Bay through Monterey Bay to the lower Salinas Valley”. – Pastel
